Exclusive – Balotelli will give Liverpool ‘completely new dimension’, says former Reds ace

first_imgFormer Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp has told talkSPORT signing Mario Balotelli would give the Reds a “completely new dimension” in attack, but also admits it has the potential to be a complete disaster for the club. The Italian forward has reportedly flown to England to complete a medical with the Merseyside outfit, who are said to have agreed a £16million deal with AC Milan for the 24-year-old’s services.Balotelli is renowned as much for his brutal goalscoring ability as his erratic behaviour on and off the pitch, with fellow former Reds stars Emile Heskey and Steve Nicol warning the club against landing the forward due to previously disruptive behaviour. And while Redknapp agrees that signing Balotelli represents a huge gamble for manager Brendan Rodgers, he also believes the striker will prove a brilliant addition if he buys into the side’s team ethic.“It’s amazing signing for Liverpool, though I can’t quite believe the club have gone down that route,” the former midfielder told Drivetime.“It’s a huge gamble for Brendan Rodgers to make, a player like Balotelli could upset what he’s worked so hard to build at the club.“With Luis Suarez, he was undoubtedly a genius and yes he was flawed, but he would always give 100 per cent on the pitch.“My worry with Mario is that, while he has that genius in him, he sometimes just looks disinterested and you can’t be like that, especially at a club like Liverpool where the fans demand 100 per cent from every player every week.“He’s going to have to dig in, work extremely hard, and will have to win the fans over and show straight away that he’s willing to be a another member of their team.“If he does that it will be brilliant for Liverpool, but if he doesn’t it will be a disaster.“In the past he hasn’t worked hard enough in certain games, but then at other times we’ve seen him terrorise teams.“Balotelli has so much ability. He can score free-kicks, crack in goals from 25 yards and will give Liverpool a completely new dimension, but he’s got to work hard.“People have said he’s not the best trainer, even Adel Taraabt [who spent last season on loan at AC Milan] said ‘if you think I’m bad, you should see Balotelli’, and that’s very worrying.“He’s got to hit the ground running and get his act together when he moves to Liverpool. Their team work ethic is amazing and if he doesn’t work as a hard as everyone else the Liverpool fans won’t suffer it.“He’s got to put the work rate in, that’s the most important thing and if he does that he will be a great signing for them.”last_img read more
