Continental Establishes New Intelligent Transportation Systems Business Unit

first_img“ITS opens up many new business opportunities for Continental. Our new business unit will further enhance our competitiveness in this market,” said Helmut Matschi, member of Continental’s executive board and president of the Interior Division. “That’s why we have chosen Silicon Valley as our new location. In addition to our existing competence, the Bay Area has the technology and talent for developing connected cars and ITS that we need to build solutions for more than just prototypes.” According to Continental, three out of every four cars around the world today contain products and systems designed by Continental that make driving safer, more environmentally compatible and more comfortable. ITS will build upon this with an extensive, intelligent networking of modes of transport and traffic facilities, through which vehicles will become part of a new traffic guidance system. The networked vehicle (NV) – or connected car – is seen as an essential technology for future transportation. Oz, the CEO of the new company, will be responsible for all new business and activities connected with Continental’s ITS endeavors worldwide. “This step is an excellent example of our strategy to make the car an integral part of the ‘Internet of Everything.’ Our key objectives include eliminating road accidents, minimizing energy consumption, maximizing comfort and usability of vehicles, and enabling them to exchange information with each other in real-time,” said Dr. Elmar Degenhart, CEO of Continental. “Our new team will be combining some of the key strengths required to create this kind of pioneering innovation – these strengths include the know-how and inventiveness of Silicon Valley’s leading experts in digital technology and the expertise of Continental in developing unique and reliable solutions for large-scale automotive production.”  AdvertisementClick Here to Read MoreAdvertisement REGENSBURG, Germany – Continental announced today it is putting together an international team of innovators from the IT and automotive industries who will focus on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The new business unit, called “Continental Intelligent Transportation Systems LLC”, will be headquartered in Silicon Valley, Calif., and will be headed by Seval Oz, an expert in vehicle networking and automation. In her previous role she worked on Google’s self-driving car project. “She brings with her a wealth of experience in the field of vehicle networking and infrastructure. She is the ideal candidate to take on this leadership position,” said Matschi. In her previous position, Oz served as Senior business development Manager at Google Inc., where she was integral in the business development and marketing efforts surrounding the launch of the self-driving car. She was presented with the PWI Women in Technology Award for Courage in San Francisco this year. She received her MBA with distinction from the Wharton Business School. She also graduated cum Laude from Wellesley College and M.I.T. with a degree in economics and political science. “I’m incredibly excited to lead Continental’s ITS team in the direction of developing world-class engineering services. Our mission is to dramatically improve mobility and safety by forging strong partnerships in both the tech and automotive realm,” Oz added.last_img read more

QBs cashing in _ except for the unwelcome Kaepernick

first_imgIn this Dec. 11, 2016, file photo, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick stands in the bench area during the second half of the team’s NFL football game against the New York Jets in Santa Clara, Calif. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)As free agency kicked off the start of a new football season, the NFL sent a clear message to anyone paying attention:Colin Kaepernick, you’re still not wanted.Probably not ever.Oh, and while we’re at it, it’s pretty clear the owners have every intention of clamping down on any other players who tries to carry on Kaepernick’s legacy.Rattled by another big dip in the television ratings and an increasing number of empty seats, the league seems determined to banish peaceful protest from the playing field. While it’s quite a stretch to say those trends are intimately related _ injuries, bad games and poor showings by several of the league’s most popular teams were surely bigger factors in the waning popularity _ the guys sitting on what remains an enormous cash cow aren’t taking any chances.Since Kaepernick is the one who got this whole thing started by having the audacity to silently kneel during the national anthem to protest racial injustice _ the nerve of that guy! _ his career could very well be over.Never mind that he’s undoubtedly more talented than many of the quarterbacks who still have paying jobs.Just look at those who have already agreed to new deals heading into the 2018 season._ Kirk Cousins , who has a losing career record as a starter and has yet to win a playoff game._ Case Keenum , coming off a marvelous season with the Minnesota Vikings but definitely a candidate for one-year wonder._ AJ McCarron , who has just three starts in four years._ Mike Glennon , saddled with an awful career record of 6-16._ Tom Savage , who went 1-6 as the Texans’ starter last season._ Chase Daniel, the epitome of a journeyman._ Josh McCown , who is 38 years old and, despite the lack of any apparent success over his long career, keeps landing on his feet. While all those guys keep cashing checks, Kaepernick was working out privately on a field in Houston , quietly going through the grind with only the help of his personal trainers, apparently still hopeful of restarting his career. His optimism is likely misplaced. While there’s always a chance of some owner breaking ranks to sign Kaepernick, the possibility grows less likely with each passing day. If anything, the owners are intent on nipping social consciousness in the bud.Stephen Ross of the Miami Dolphins probably spoke out loud what most owners are saying behind closed doors when he was quoted as saying his players would be required to stand for the national anthem this season.Ross quickly backtracked, saying his comments were “misconstrued,” but a statement explaining his position left no doubt that he’s had enough of taking a knee.“I’m passionate about the cause of social justice, and I feel that kneeling is an ineffective tactic that alienates more people than it enlists,” he said. There was also a report from the Houston Chronicle that Texans owner Robert McNair doesn’t want to acquire players who have engaged in protests or might be likely to going forward. While the team quickly denied the report, McNair’s stance on such issues is apparent to everyone. At an owners meeting last year, he grumbled that “we can’t have the inmates running the prison” _ a remark that prompted most of his players to join arms and kneel before their next game .Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks cut ties with two of their most outspoken players, Michael Bennett and Richard Sherman . While a point could be made that these moves were strictly designed to clear room under the salary cap and rebuild an aging defense, one couldn’t help but wonder if their support of Kaepernick’s protest contributed to the moves. After clearly being blackballed last season, Kaepernick filed a grievance alleging the owners colluded to keep him out of the league . But it would probably take a mass walkout by all the fellow players to get him back on the field, and that’s not happening. There’s too much money at stake to risk it all for a single player, no matter how unjustly he’s been treated. Even if all the players could come together as one, chances are their protest would collapse as soon as they miss a few paychecks, just as it did during the infamous 1987 strike when a plethora of big-name players crossed the picket line. So, as we get started on a new NFL season, Kaepernick can expect to keep working out in solitude, at least until he decides on another line of work.A bunch of less-qualified quarterbacks will continue to hold jobs. The only message we can send:Shame on you, NFL.___Paul Newberry is a sports columnist for The Associated Press. Bob Costas exits longtime home at NBC Sports

first_imgIn this Nov. 10, 2016, file photo, NBC sportscaster Bob Costas appears before an NFL football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns, in Baltimore. (AP Photo/Gail Burton, File) When the switch was announced in early 2017, Costas said he had decided on his own that the time was right for a change. He said then he wanted to do long-form programming and commentary on special events, likening his new role to what former NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw does for the network. On Tuesday, Costas told the New York Post of his decision to leave NBC Sports, saying his departure was settled “quietly and happily for all concerned.”In August 2018, the paper reported that he was no longer satisfied with his role at NBC and a contract that limited his participation in other projects.Costas, who joined NBC Sports in 1979, has covered baseball, football and basketball and horse racing as well as served as the face and voice of the Olympics. He plans to continue working on the MLB Network and is interested in doing an interview show focusing on sports and news, the Post said.“In addition to MLB Network, Bob certainly has a next chapter in his career and we look forward to developing those possibilities,” Montag said. Costas, 66, served as the emcee for NBC’s Olympics 11 times starting in 1992. In early 2017, he stepped aside for network newcomer Mike Tirico, formerly with ESPN. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob Costas, who stepped down as NBC’s prime-time Olympics host two years ago, has left the network’s sports division altogether. NBC Sports said Wednesday that Costas parted ways with his longtime employer, providing no further details.Sandy Montag, Costas’ manager, said it was handled smoothly.“Everything in this transition was planned and done (by) mutual agreement,” Montag said in an emailed statement. He said Costas had a “great partnership” with executives including Dick Ebersol and Mark Lazarus, the current NBC Broadcasting & Sports chairman.last_img read more

In the five team senior ladies competition, 2013 All Ireland intermediate club champions Claregalway had a blistering start by emphatically beating local side Corca Dhuibhne by 9-6 to 1-03. Confey of Kildare also beat the West Kerry side 5-13 to 0-2 before The Lillywhites club finally fell to Claregalway’s superior forwards led by captain Clodagh Cooney with the match ending 1-11 to 1-0. Ó Sé commented, “the Com órtas has always been about the craic and GAA camaraderie and it’s great to see teams and supporters from the UK and across Ireland coming to our part of the world and enjoy themselves. The Ó Sé’s are also grateful for the support of PhoneWatch and also Fáilte Ireland, sports club communications app Sportora, Lee Strand Milk and media partner Newstalk 106-108FM, without whom the weekend couldn’t go ahead”. Claregalway Ladies flew the Galway flag high at last weekend’s 27th PhoneWatch Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé. The six competition tournament at junior, intermediate and senior level took place all over the Dingle Peninsula in wet and windy conditions and ranks as one of the biggest Gaelic football club gatherings in the world, attracting 36 international and Irish adult ladies and men’s Gaelic football clubs this year. The victorious Claregalway team before winning the senior ladies final as part of the 27th PhoneWatch Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, a 36 team adult men’s and ladies Gaelic football festival which took place last weekend all over the Dingle Peninsula. No Repro Fee. South Kerry’s Southern Gaels got through to the final having beaten mid-Kerry side Castleisland 4-17 to 1-2 in a straight semi-final. Claregalway were a professionally run outfit from start to finish and brought a big panel on the trip to ensure freshness prevailed. In the final, Southern Gaels found scores hard to come by with Claregalway’s fullback Amy Rohan marshaling any threats with ease. The locals couldn’t manage Galway county star Megan Glynn at corner forward who amassed a personal tally of 4-2 and was later crowned player of the tournament. The Galway side proved far too strong winning out on a scoreline of 8-10 to 2-3. Pádraig Óg Ó Sé said, ‘We are thrilled with the enthusiasm of teams to be involved in our tournament and keep my father’s spirit alive. We simply could not do this without the co-operation from local clubs who provided us with their pitches and we want to sincerely thank them for that.” print WhatsApp Facebook Twitter Emaillast_img read more
