Shawnee Mission says it’s awaiting clarification from state education department on transgender restroom guidelines

first_imgThe Shawnee Mission School District said this week that it is awaiting clarification from the Kansas State Department of Education on the implications of the guidance issued by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice on ensuring the civil rights of transgender students are not violated.District spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal said the district has to date focused on working individually with transgender students and their families on plans to ensure their comfort and safety.“The district has not adopted any specific policies regarding transgender students, but seeks to protect all students from discrimination or harassment, and ensure students feel safe and respected within our school community,” Neal said. “We will continue to follow the processes in place as we await further information and guidance from KSDE.”The federal guidelines on transgender accommodations came in the wake of a controversial bill passed in North Carolina that prohibits people who identify with a gender different than their sex at birth from using the restroom aligned with their current gender identity.SM East’s administrators had been proactive about addressing transgender rights prior to the emergence of the national controversy on the issue, organizing a training event for faculty and staff this past fall that featured two transgender SM East students. Both of those students indicated that bathroom use proved to be one of the more stressful parts of their experience at the school, as they preferred to use the gender neutral bathroom on the school’s fourth floor – which had the potential to make them late for class because it was out of the way. What’s not clear is whether any transgender students in the district are currently using the school restrooms aligned with their gender identities — a practice that would be prohibited under the North Carolina law. A similar bill, The Student Physical Privacy Act, was floated in the Kansas House this March.“Schools work on an individual basis with students and families, so there is not a record or report that tracks [whether transgender students use non-gender neutral restrooms] other than individual student records, which are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA),” Neal said.last_img read more

Rodgers: ‘Unworkable’ for Celtic to play for point

first_imgCeltic boss Brendan Rodgers has warned it’s “unworkable” for his side to play for a point in their Europa League decider against Salzburg. The Hoops must avoid defeat to continue their European campaign into 2019 by reaching the knockout rounds.Rodgers, however, insisted his team will play to win, despite lining up against “top-class” opposition in the form of last season’s semi-finalists.He said: “We do that for every game, I think it’s unworkable, especially when your game is an offensive game, our intent is always to go and win. “There are certain stages when you can manage the game but it’s always dangerous to go in thinking you just need a point.“We play a pressure game and if we come off that pressure it’s difficult for us.“People say we only need a point but they have won five out of five and have the motivation to make it six from six.“They are a team that have been very impressive, I’m sure they come not wanting to blot their record.” Salzburg arrive in Glasgow having already qualified thanks to five wins from five.Rodgers acknowledged the size of the task facing his charges against the Austrian champions but drew belief from Celtic’s continued improvement this campaign. The Northern Irishman added: “What’s important for us is we arrived into the last game and it’s in our hands.“We know it will be a really tough game, Salzburg are a top-class side.“But we get the chance to show the confidence and belief we’ve had since virtually after we last played them.“In European competitions, we have got better as the competition has gone on. Part of that is belief, once everything settles down and we have our rhythm, we get better.“We’re playing at a high level so we arrive with great belief of getting a result.”Salzburg boss Marco Rose said Celtic will be made to work if they want to join his team in the knockout rounds.Rose has already masterminded the Austrians’ safe passage through but insisted Salzburg won’t by taking their foot off the gas against the Hoops. He said: “Obviously Celtic will have more supporters than the last game in Salzburg but that is what we are looking forward to, the atmosphere.“It is clear that Celtic need a point but we want to play a good game so Celtic have to earn that point because we will give everything.“We have reached our most important goal already, we have advanced to the knockout stages.“We are in first place but it is not all about winning six games, we want to be part of a great game.“I think everyone who comes here tomorrow have earned that right to experience a great game.“It is a very cool stadium, you can feel the atmosphere even without the supporters. Even in the locker rooms you can breathe in the atmosphere.“The supporters are notorious, amazing. We are happy to be here, but we also want to show that we are rightfully here.”last_img read more

Retail Marketing in Your Commissary!

first_imgby Christian Maino Vieytes, Graduate Student, The University of Illinois at Urbana-ChampaignCan the retail environment be harnessed to affect positive change? Can retail be used as a means to advocate for public health? One example of how retail has affected public health is cigarette smoking. Public health organizations and government have partnered to curb retail marketing of cigarette products. Restricting cigarette advertisements from the public eye has led to significant decreases in smoking rates1. Although we may not realize it, public policy plays a major role in the development of a “healthy retail environment” and the health of a nation. Creating an environment that makes healthy choices easy to make is a crucial strategy for promoting healthful behavior. Another example we will discuss will shed light on this idea. Nevertheless, although these are all large scale changes, they can be applied to smaller settings, such as your local commissary. In this discussion, we will focus our attention on two specific methods that involve choice architecture and store tours. Sodas in School and Visibility  Studies have shown that soda machines in schools are directly related to overall caloric intake and obesity in young students 2. Some states and their governing institutions have experimented with limiting the sale of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages. In California, the ban on the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages in public schools resulted in a substantial decline in the overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (mainly sodas)3. Research has also shed light on how changing the landscape of food access in schools can influence how much “junk” food is consumed by students 4. This example highlights the concept of making certain some items are more visible than others and the power that this can have for consumption behavior. There is an entire field of study that is devoted to understanding how the arrangement of items in grocery stores influences our eating patterns! It is called “choice architecture”5. Reorganizing a store so that the healthier items are more visible than other, less-healthful, products is one effective strategy for promoting healthier consumption. Locating produce visible in the front of the store and providing greater than 14 different types of fruits and vegetables have been demonstrated to result in healthier eating patterns by the store patrons6. Choice architecture can also take the form of rearranging shelf space so that more of it is reserved for healthier food options7. Nutrition Education in Your Grocery Store! Another ingenious way of harnessing the potential is to offer free grocery store tours that emphasize healthy eating. Research done in this area has demonstrated that grocery store patrons receiving the tour are more motivated to consume more fruits and vegetables and healthier options in general8,9. A grocery store tour is one way of educating the general public about nutritional concepts. Effective grocery store themes can include: Eating healthy on a budgetMaking more healthful choicesAvoiding the traps of unhealthful productsIncreasing the stability of healthful foods by choosing frozen options and other methodsReading and interpreting nutrition labelsMany people feel motivated to change their eating patterns and live a more healthful life. However, they may feel helpless in finding the measures to promote this healthy lifestyle because of an entire list of self-perceived barriers10. Grocery store tours can be the bridge by providing hands-on experience and information directly to and empowering consumers. They can be reinforced by providing an incentive, such as a gift card for purchasing a healthy item, or two, from the commissary. Nutrition education can also be provided more delicately. Shelf tags or labels, such as that labeling high-sodium and high-calorie foods or healthful nutrients such as fiber, can be used to orient store customers towards healthier options11. Results from the research on the use of shelf labels is exciting given, that it has been shown that consumers are more likely to consume products tagged as having beneficial nutrients! The local grocery store is being redefined as a center for nutrition education. The growing body of evidence shows that promoting nutrition education in grocery stores can be effective for reducing the burden of diseases such as high blood pressure.12. The methods we have discussed here can also be harnessed for growing bonds within the community. What have you seen in your grocery store to promote nutrition? References:1. PC Refresh. SSSHHH, Quiet. Don’t Tell My Wife!

first_imgIn my blog titled “why buy for the little guy”, I shared that I was in the market for a new home desktop to replace my existing one.  Well, today I spent my 2009 tax refund check on a new computer – an iMac. So why the secrecy?  … The iMac is a surprise for my wife’s birthday.  My wife has wanted a Mac since we left college and I’ve always been a PC guy (grew up with one, always used them at work, etc.) and when I started working at Intel almost 10 years ago, I could not justify a Mac given my corporate loyalties and who was paying the bills.  When Apple adopted Intel architecture a couple years ago, my options were now opened (really my old excuses were not longer valid).  I’m very excited to install the new iMac as the challenges of my old technology and the limitations and headaches they were giving me will be gone – and I think I’ll finally get some good-guy points with my wife.Chrislast_img read more
