ETF inflows surged in August

Keywords ETFs Equity ETFs led the way during the month, with almost $1.9 billion in net flows, followed by fixed-income funds with $835 million worth.“Canadian equity flows were buoyed by creations in XIU, as well as some low-cost index tracking products, dividend strategies and the gold sector,” the report states. Indeed, August saw the highest Canadian equity flows of the year so far, at $1.3 billion. The August data may be “slightly skewed” by structural changes at Invesco Canada Ltd. and Purpose, the report says. Invesco is adopting its ETFs as underlying funds for some of its traditional mutual funds, while Purpose Investments Inc. converted a number of its closed-end funds into ETFs.“At the same time, investors are naturally clamouring for fixed income ETFs of almost every flavour, including both passive and active,” the report states. Thanks to August’s strong overall activity, ETF inflows topped $13.8 billion through the first eight months of the year. Almost $9 billion of that total has flowed into equity ETFs, with $5.2 billion flowing into international equity, $2.8 billion into U.S. equity, and  $907 million into Canadian equity.Another $4.1 billion has flowed into fixed-income funds this year, while $918 million has flowed into multi-asset products.According to the report, bond ETFs have attracted flows into three main areas: low-cost aggregate products for pure and broad exposure; preferred shares, mainly actively managed; and global bond ETFs.The four largest ETF providers — BlackRock Canada Asset Management Ltd.’s iShares division BMO Asset Management Inc. (BMOAM), Vanguard Investments Canada Inc. and Horizons ETFs Management (Canada) Inc., all based in Toronto,— each recorded new asset growth of between 1% and 2% in August.Vanguard led the way through the first eight months of the year, with $3.4 billion in net flows, followed closely by BMOAM with $3.2 billion. Stewardship / Resistance Scan for Oct 31, 2018

first_imgCOPD reviews highlight some benefits to antibiotics but also precautionsTwo Cochrane reviews this week covered the use of antibiotics for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which found benefits in some instances but overall precautions about prescribing them judiciously. The first review, published Oct 29, focused on COPD flare-ups (exacerbations) and included 2,663 study participants across 19 trials, 11 involving outpatients, 7 with inpatients, and 1 with intensive care unit (ICU) patients.”Researchers have found that antibiotics have some effect on inpatients and outpatients, but these effects are small, and they are inconsistent for some outcomes (treatment failure) and absent for other outcomes (mortality, length of hospital stay),” the Cochrane reviewers concluded. The study in ICU patients, however, showed a strong beneficial effect of antibiotics.”These inconsistent effects,” the reviewers add, “call for research into clinical signs and biomarkers that can help identify patients who would benefit from antibiotics, while sparing antibiotics for patients who are unlikely to experience benefit and for whom downsides of antibiotics (side effects, costs, and multi-resistance) should be avoided.”The second review, posted yesterday, included 14 studies on prophylactic (preventive) antibiotics for COPD. The studies collectively involved 3,932 patients, mostly frequent exacerbators with at least moderate COPD. Also, the mean age ranged from 65 to 72 years. The review found that continuous and intermittent prophylactic macrolides reduced COPD exacerbations, while the impact of pulsed antibiotics remains uncertain. The reviewers warn, “Because of concerns about antibiotic resistance and specific adverse effects, consideration of prophylactic antibiotic use should be mindful of the balance between benefits to individual patients and the potential harms to society created by antibiotic overuse.”Oct 29 Cochrane review on COPD flare-ups Oct 30 Cochrane review on prophylactic therapy Study notes high MCR rates in healthy villagers in VietnamMore than 80% of Escherichia coli–positive stool specimens collected from healthy people in a village in Vietnam contained the colistin-resistance MCR gene, according to a research letter today in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.Researchers collected one stool sample each from 98 people living in one of 36 households in a village in Thai Binh province along the northern Vietnamese coast. The villagers ranged in age from 2 to 81 years, with a median of 46.Of the 98 samples, 88 (89.8%) were positive by culture assay for any pathogen, and 83 (84.7%) were positive for E coli. Of the 83 E coli isolates, 69 (83.1%) tested positive for colistin resistance, 68 of which (81.9%) contained MCR genes. Of that total, 64 were MCR-1, 3 were MCR-3, and one was MCR-1/3. Also, 29 of the 36 households (80.6%) had at least one person harboring an MCR gene.Colistin is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in chickens and pigs in Vietnam, the authors note. “Such a high amount of colistin consumption by animals in Vietnam may facilitate the wide dissemination of [colistin-resistant E coli] in residents of rural communities,” they postulate.Colistin is considered an antibiotic of last resort for multidrug-resistant infections.Oct 31 J Antimicrob Chemother letter Benefits noted for ceftolozane-tazobactam for treating MDR PseudomonasCeftolozane-tazobactam for patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa illness, known for being a hard-to-treat hospital-acquired infection, is effective, especially when used early, researchers who studied use of the therapy in a multicenter study reported today in Open Forum Infectious Diseases. For their retrospective study, the investigators collected information on US adults from 20 hospitals who received ceftolozane-tazobactam treatment for MDR Pseudomonas infections from any source for at least 24 hours. Of 205 patients included in the analysis, severe illness and high levels of other medical conditions were common—59% had pneumonia. The team found that delayed treatment was common, with therapy beginning at a median of 9 days after culture collection.Susceptibility testing found that 125 of 139 (89.9%) of isolates were susceptible to the drug combination. Deaths occurred in 39 (19%) of patients, with clinical success and microbiological cure numbers at 151 (73.7%) and 145 (70.7%), respectively.Being started on ceftolozane-tazobactam treatment within 4 days of culture collection was associated with survival, clinical success, and microbiological cure. The researchers said their study is the largest they know of so far to evaluate the treatment combo for MDR Pseudomonas infections. They highlighted the fact that no positive results were seen for concomitant intravenous antibiotics or high-dose ceftolozane-tazobactam treatment, though both practices were common, hinting that monotherapy may be enough for treating susceptible Pseudomonas infections. They also said the benefit of earlier treatment initiation was significant. “Antimicrobial stewardship programs and individual practitioners alike need to strike a difficult balance between early use of agents such as ceftolozane-tazobactam in appropriate patients who may benefit from it with the economic and microbiological consequences of overuse,” they wrote, acknowledging that rapid tests and scoring systems for MDR may help flag patients who could benefit from earlier treatment.Oct 31 Open Forum Infect Dis abstractlast_img read more

England, India tours set to boost CWI after financially ‘horrible’ 2018

first_imgBRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Cricket West Indies is bracing for a huge financial windfall from the ongoing England tour and the upcoming home series against India, as the cash-strapped organisation hopes to make up for a disastrous 2018 when they lost an estimated US$20 million. According to chief executive, Johnny Grave, CWI is expected to rake in about US$20 million this year, allowing the governing body to at least break even, and more importantly continue to fund its extensive age group programmes.England concluded their three-Test series against West Indies earlier this week and will now turn their attention to the limited overs phase, which comprises five One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20s.The tour is England’s first full one of the Caribbean in a decade and with world number one-ranked India scheduled to play two Tests, three ODIs and three T20s between July and August, Grave said 2019 would be “massive” for CWI’s revenues. “It (England tour) is always important but this year more than ever because of the fact last year was such a bad year for us financially,” Grave said.“Playing Sri Lanka at home and Bangladesh at home, the contract that we have with our our TV crew … probably 50 per cent of our revenue comes from TV, and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the worst value within that deal. So to have got through last year … was tough.”He continued: “Last year was financially horrible and therefore this year with England and India coming after the World Cup, will be a record year for the West Indies. “England is always important but certainly after the 2018 season we had where we probably had the lowest revenue we’ve had for decades, to suddenly be able to jump into this means that we’ll come out the end of this year with a  kind of par score which is good from a business point of view.”In recent years, England have undertaken single format tours of the Caribbean. In 2017, they played only ODIs, in 2015 they travelled for a three-Test series only, while the 2014 tour comprised ODIs and T20s.The ongoing tour began with a near sold-out opening Test at Kensington Oval here on January 23 and wraps on March 10 with the final T20I in St Kitts, marking six weeks of high profile cricket for the Caribbean. “This year is massive. To have an England tour of this size looking ahead for the next five years is unprecedented,” Grave explained.“To get them in all three formats … three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and three T20s, then to have the World Cup in England where we’ve obviously won twice, and then to host India at home and be the first game we’re playing in this new Test championship … it’s a massive amount of cricket for us.“It’s a big year of cricket, big year financially and by the end of it we’ll be back on an even keel and looking ahead to the next phase which is a new ODI league, new Test championship and for us a new TV deal.” But the Englishman also struck a note of caution, warning that CWI also needed to exercise prudence going forward, especially with the commercial structure heavily reliant on high profile home tours.“It is important we make massive profits this year because of the losses last year so whilst there is lots of money flowing from this England tour and lots more to come against India, we’ve got to run a really conservative year to make sure we can repay the debt from last year,” he noted.“We don’t sit on massive reserves which from a business planning point of view, is not ideal. We do want to grow reserves to help manage the peaks and troughs because we don’t really control England, India and when those tours come so you want to be able to ride those bumps in revenue.”last_img read more

Marshall: NFL teams can show support by hiring Kaepernick

first_imgIn this Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, file photo, Denver Broncos inside linebacker Brandon Marshall (54) takes a knee during the national anthem prior to an NFL football game against the Houston Texans, in Denver.  (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey, File) ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall says he appreciates NFL teams supporting the rights of their players to protest during the national anthem. He also suggests they show it by giving Colin Kaepernick a job .“The dude, he’s in shape, he’s yoked, actually,” said Marshall, who saw his ex-college teammate on a TMZ video recently. “He’s so strong. He’s ready to go. He told me he’s been working out when I last talked to him. He said he’s just waiting for a call. That’s the next step.”Marshall is among many players who believe Kaepernick is being blackballed by NFL teams over the movement he started last year when he declined to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the 2016 preseason to bring attention to racial inequality in America.Kaepernick remains unsigned six months after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers and becoming a free agent.“There’s a lot of (poor) quarterback play around the league,” Marshall said. “I’m not saying the Bears should sign him, but you know the player Mike Glennon is. You can’t tell me he’s better than Colin Kaepernick, and he’s a starter right now.”Marshall, who attended the University of Nevada with Kaepernick, was one of the first NFL players to join Kaepernick in the national anthem protests last season. At times, Marshall was joined by a teammate or two, but for the most part he spent half the season as the sole protester on the Denver sideline. He lost endorsements and fans over the protests. but also received kudos from general manager John Elway — who’s no fan of the kneel-downs — for backing up his actions with charity and community work.Marshall ended his protests last year after Denver police agreed to change their use-of-force policy.Marshall didn’t plan on kneeling this season, but he began reconsidering following the president’s response to the racially charged conflicts in Charlottesville, Virginia. He stood apart from his teammates during the first two weeks of the season but didn’t take a knee until Sunday.Marshall was among 200-plus players across the league who knelt, sat, stretched or prayer during the “Star Spangled Banner” in response to the president’s call for team owners to fire players who disrespect flag and country by refusing to stand for the anthem. He was one of 32 Broncos who took a knee in Buffalo.“Last year I did it all by myself for eight games, but it’s a lot different to have your brothers backing you,” Marshall said. “I think whenever we decide to come together and do something, there’s strength in numbers, they say, right? So, I definitely think that makes us stronger.”Yet, coach Vance Joseph is concerned this divisive issue in society could also bisect his locker room. So he’s planning to address the issue with his players this week as they prepare for a game against the Oakland Raiders to “figure out what’s best for our football team to keep us together.”The Dallas Cowboys took a knee together before the national anthem Monday night in Arizona and then stood arm-in-arm during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” But Marshall said that’s no blueprint for the Broncos.“Everybody’s not going to kneel,” Marshall said, noting Derek Wolfe’s comments about always standing for the flag. Not everyone will stand, either, Marshall suggested.“In my opinion that means nothing if we all stand and lock arms,” Marshall said. “I mean, I understand that’s showing unity. But I just don’t see the point in it.”___For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapletonlast_img read more

Galway speed golfer Rob vows to bounce back after world championship disappointment

first_imgIt meant he relinquished the title which he won last year and also in 2013, but rather than lament the loss, Rob is determined to work harder than ever to get back to winning ways. Galway speed golfer Rob Hogan has vowed to bounce back stronger than ever after narrowly losing his world title in the United States. Rob, who is based in Cregmore Park just outside Galway city, came tied for second place at the Speedgolf World Championships at The Glen Club near Chicago, finishing four shots behind winner Jamie Young of the United States last week. He said: “The tactics I brought to speedgolf in 2013 put me three years ahead of everyone else and I never really changed them because I had kept on winning. But now that I have lost, I will be working through the winter on a tactic, completely different from the last three years.“The next two events are in New Zealand and Australia in March. The next few months I will be training every morning and working every afternoon and evening to try and make a living and to try get down under in one piece to unveil the most radical approach to Speedgolf ever, at least since the last most radical approach which was taken by me in 2013 and win every event on the calendar in 2017.”In speed golf, competitors combine their stroke play with the time it takes them to complete the round to determine their overall score. Rob shot rounds of 82 and 82 in 46 and 44 minutes respectively for a final score of 254 in Chicago. It was his sixth second place in 12 tournaments — however he has won the other six tournaments.Rob’s efforts to continuing competing in speed golf tournaments around the world are being supported by Bray-based manufacturing supply company Hard Metal Machine Tools, who have sponsored Rob for more than a year.Rob said: “Without Hard Metal I would not have been there at all considering the considerable cost of this endeavour. Neither would I have been there last year when I won for the second time. Without Hard Metal I would not have the confidence to go out there and compete proudly for Ireland. I am very lucky to have a company like this behind me.Hard Metal Managing Director Philip Hannigan said: “Rob has done fantastically well again, flying the flag for Ireland in the US. He’ll be disappointed not to have retained his world title but lost out to an excellent performance. He’ll bounce back from this and Hard Metal will continue to support him as he performs at the top of his sport around the world.”Rob is also keen to stage a major Speedgolf event in Ireland. He successfully hosted the inaugural Speedgolf Irish Open Championship at Galway Bay Golf Club last month — and will be running the second staging of the event in August 2017, which will be preceded by four qualifying events. The USGA Rules of golf apply to Speedgolf but with two exceptions: a) speedgolfers are allowed to putt with the flagstick left in the hole, and b) in the case of a lost ball or one that is hit out of bounds, players are permitted to play it like a lateral hazard. To lighten the load and increase speed, speedgolfers wear running shoes in place of golf shoes and typically carry only 4–7 clubs.•  Hard Metal is Ireland’s leading machine tools supplier, providing cutting and grinding tools and productivity solutions to engineering manufacturers throughout Ireland.
