Delinquent Employers Targeted in Drive to Collect Outstanding NIF Contributions

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail The Ministry of Labour and Social Security will be targeting delinquent employers as it works to collect outstanding contributions owed to the National Insurance Fund (NIF).“If necessary, legal proceedings will be instituted against delinquent employers to recover what is due to the fund. A revision of the fines and penalties will also be recommended to Cabinet,” said State Minister, Hon. Andrew Gallimore, during his recent contribution to the 2009/10 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives. He urged all workers, those in the formal sector, as well as informal business operators such as hairdressers, barbers, vendors, and farmers, to register and contribute to the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) to ensure that they will have a pension when they retire.“There are certain professional groups, as well as persons operating as consultants and contractors who have not been contributing as required under the law. They may not see the need now, but we have living examples of many professionals who neglected to contribute and are now destitute and without a pension,” Mr. Gallimore said.It is against this background that the Ministry will be embarking on a public education campaign to sensitise all Jamaicans about the importance of contributing to the NIS. “As a country, we cannot leave our citizens to chance. We must begin a conversation around savings and proper planning for the future,” Mr. Gallimore said. There are currently 450,000 persons contributing to the NIS, representing about one third of eligible contributors to the scheme. There are some 90,000 beneficiaries, but there is a $3 billion shortfall between income and expenditure. Inside Conditions…The grass may be not greener

first_imgAUBREY BRUCEWhen the Rivers Casino opened in Pittsburgh in August of 2009, I suppose that the owners and investors may have originally thought that the venue would inherit an almost automatic demographic consisting of those from the immediate Allegheny County vicinity who in the past, loyally embarked on weekly bus trips to Atlantic City to “patronize” the slots and other games of chance. These sports “people” would surely relish a short trip to the North Shore to find “recreation” as opposed to enduring a several hours long roundtrip from the steel city to the boardwalk sitting atop Atlantic Ocean shore.Well Pittsburghers may have ceased flocking to the iconic “Las Vegas of the East” but their GPS systems may be set to navigate them to a destination not quite as close as the north shore and not as far as the Jersey shore. At a time when many casinos across the country are drowning in debt, the Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County seems to have found a formula to satisfy and quench the thirst of the patrons of the entertainment and gaming industry, while simultaneously avoiding red ink.One of the draws is their boxing and MMA events.  This past weekend the “King of the Cage” MMA fights debuted at the Meadows.  The competition was fierce and consistent.  The fight on the bottom of the card, was a bout between flyweights Jason Alexander versus Ben Suehr. Alexander came out a man possessed quickly ending the bout at 1:10 of the 1st round when Suehr “tapped out.”  For those of you who may not know, tapped out means, it happens when an opponent gives up or concedes defeat. However, the men must beware of the female fighters of the MMA because when Chi Sheibley of Chicago, IL faced Melissa Gasdick of Pittsburgh, PA it was just as competitive and brutal as any of the male events. These women were not on the porch drinking mint juleps and exchanging knitting needles.   The 1st round was a true battle ending with Sheibley having Gasdick pinned at the bell.  However, that would be a short lived victory because just 8 seconds into 2nd round Gasdick almost knocked Chi Sheibley back to Chicago.Dictionary.reference.com says that women being referred to as the gentler sex; “is a dated term, usually used for humorous effect but sometimes perceived as condescending to women. It makes reference to a stereotype of women’s basic nature, namely that women are gentle in comparison to men.”Well, well, well, there was nothing humorous about the power of Ms. Gasdick because as far as I am concerned she is a cross between the Mona Lisa and Bruce Lee. Also, one could have been easily misled by her beauty and the two “Pippi Longstocking” braids that she sported hanging down her back.  Any “normal” male who may be of the ill-advised opinion that they can successfully challenge and defeat Ms. Gasdick in a “caged” setting  had better check their insurance policy first, their jock strap second and last but certainly not least, their sanity before they embark on such a dangerous journey.Miss Gasdick is no joke and I predict that she will be a major player as far as women’s MMA championship competition is concerned. The ‘Meadows’ began their ‘Madness at Meadows’ boxing series with partner Crown Boxing on July 26, 2014.  That event was successful and entertaining.  It also provided local boxers with an opportunity to increase their visibility as well as build a fan base, locally and regionally. For those music lovers out there upcoming musical events will feature performances by legendary singers Natalie Cole and Patti LaBelle.  Both are scheduled to perform as part of the Meadows upcoming events:  Ms. Cole in mid-July and Ms. Labelle in early September.Notes:  The Pirates swept the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. None of the Buc’s were seriously injured by the venomous and revenge seeking D-backs pitching corps.  Wow! What a difference a year makes.  The Pens have finished cleaning out their lockers after a 4-1 first round series brutalizing by the New York Rangers. Pittsburgh has been bounced from the playoffs since 2009, the last year that the won “Lord” Stanley’s Cup.  When Pittsburgh gets and stays healthy only then will it be a different result.  The NFL draft will be conducted Thursday.  The Steelers picks will be if available, in this order; 1st round CB, 2nd round Safety, 3rd round CB, 4th round outside LB.  If I am right, I am the “Swami.” If I am wrong then I am “salami,” peace.Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected] or 412.583.6741He is also a contributing columnist for urbanmediatoday.comFollow him on [email protected]last_img read more

Luciano Vietto reveals why he chose to move to Atletico Madrid

first_img “Simeone knows me well,” explained Vietto. “He’s a coach well capable of getting the best out of me.  The Argentine forward also thinks the club is more similar to those back in his homeland.  Arsenal and Liverpool were interested in the Villarreal star, but he picked Diego Simeone’s side and cited the coach as a reason. “Atleti are a club who always strive to win trophies and have a set of supporters that remind me of Argentinean fans.” “I’ll be soon integrated with the rest of the group and am sure that the rest of the squad will look after me.  In actual fact, Simeone was left laughing at the forward during his first training session at the Majadahonda complex. 09/07/2015center_img CEST Upd. at 16:53 Rik Sharma Atletico’s pre-season regime is usually tough and there was no exception on Thursday, with Vietto left huffing and puffing while his team-mates worked.
