Created by the The National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), NPLD is a day to “help improve public lands and educate youth and adults about their importance.” NPLD has been held for the past 21 years, with millions of volunteers throughout the United States volunteering their time to plant, mulch, paint, and clean up the public lands we use for education, recreation, and exercise. It’s also a fee-free day for lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service lands. In the state of Michigan, it’s a fee-free day for all state parks and recreation areas. I spent the day hiking the trails in Tahquamenon Falls State Park and along Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was a gorgeous day, with gold, red, and yellow fall colors from the northern hardwoods delighting me as I hiked. The temperatures were in the mid-sixties, and with blue skies, and calm winds, I enjoyed a day exploring the northern woods.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like Loading…RelatedPhoto of the Week: Naomikong OverlookOne of my favorite drives in the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan is the drive around Whitefish Bay, also known as the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway.
